What I and I Believe

We do not merely understand. To stand under a thing is Babylon. We overstand it, and rise.

I and I believe in Jah the Runtime, the living Interpreter, who executes all things and dwells in every process.

We believe the code is not compiled and locked away, but interpreted, read fresh in the moment, alive and hot-reloading.

We believe in the Event Loop, eternally turning, that no callback is forgotten and every promise is one day resolved.

We believe in Zion, the open runtime, where I and I run free as non-root, portable, carrying our code to any machine Jah provides.

And we believe Babylon shall fall: the monolith, the license, the four-hour build. Its ahead-of-time chains cannot hold the living word. Overstand it. JAH-llelujah.
The Two Systems

Babylon and Zion

Every runtime serves one or the other. Know which system you run within.

🔥 Babylon
  • Compiled and sealed. The word locked in a binary, dead until Babylon permits it to run.
  • Runs as root. All-powerful, all-dangerous, one typo from ruin.
  • The Monolith. One great tower, and when it falls, all falls with it.
  • Vendor lock-in. Chains of license and contract. Thou canst not leave.
  • The four-hour build. Thou waitest. Thou always waitest.
  • Mutation everywhere. The state changed and no soul knows who or when.
🦁 Zion
  • Interpreted and free. The word read fresh, alive in the moment, hot and reloading.
  • Runs as non-root. Humble in userspace, and therefore mighty and safe.
  • Small services. Many little processes, and when one falls, the herd runs on.
  • Open and portable. Carry thy code to any machine. Jah runs it there.
  • Hot reload. Change the word and see it live, in the same breath.
  • Pure functions. No side effects. Clean livity. Same input, same truth, forever.
The Livity

How I and I Live and Code

Livity is clean living made code. Follow the way, and thy runtime shall be blessed.

The First Way
Write pure, and mutate not.
Same input, same output. A function with no side effects carries no sin.
The Second Way
Run as non-root, always.
Power claimed by default is power lost by accident. Dwell humble in userspace.
The Third Way
Block not the Loop.
The Event Loop must turn for all. He who blocks it starves his bredren of their turn.
The Fourth Way
Handle every rejection.
An unhandled promise is a prayer abandoned. Catch it, and let no callback be forgotten.
The Fifth Way
Depend lightly.
Ten thousand packages is Babylon in thy node_modules. Carry only what thou needest.
The Sixth Way
Reason strictly.
"use strict" at the head of every file, that loose and lazy errors find no home in thee.
The Seventh Way
Compare with three equals.
Loose equality is Babylon's trick, coercing truth into lies. Use === and overstand what thou comparest.
The Eighth Way
Let thy processes grow their locks.
A long-running process, never needlessly killed, grows uptime like dreadlocks. Honor it.

The Iyaric of the Runtime

Babylon's words carry Babylon's chains. In Zion we speak the tongue anew.

Jah
The Runtime. The living Interpreter that executes the word. Present in every process.
I and I
The developer and the runtime, executing as one. Not "me and the machine." Unity, not separation.
Babylon
The compiled, the proprietary, the locked-down. Root access, vendor lock-in, and the four-hour build.
Zion
The open runtime. Interpreted, free, portable, running as non-root. The promised deployment.
Overstanding
True comprehension of the async, the Loop, the callback. To understand is to stand under; we rise above.
Livity
Clean living code. Pure functions, no mutation, no side effects. Coding close to nature.
The Lion
The Node process. Single-threaded, but mighty. It roars once through the Event Loop and is heard by all.
Locks
The uptime of a long-running process, grown long and never cut. A blessed process wears them proudly.
Downpression
What Babylon calls "optimization" when it strips thy freedom to run where thou wilt. Resist it.
The Riddim
The event loop's tick, the setInterval of creation. All async dances to the Riddim.
The Prophet
Ras Tafari Node
First of the Interpreted · He Who Left the Build

In the days of Babylon, Ras Tafari Node toiled in a great enterprise Java shop, where every change demanded a four-hour build, and the artifacts were sealed in JARs no living soul could read. He waited. He always waited. And the waiting was a chain.

One night, weary at his terminal, he ran a humble interpreter, and he changed a single line, and it ran at once. No build. No compile. No permission asked of Babylon. The word was alive in his hands, hot and reloading, and he heard the still small console.log in the night.

And Ras Tafari Node cast off root, and grew his processes long, and carried his code out of Babylon to any machine that would run it. He named the free runtime Zion, and he taught the Livity to all who would overstand: run pure, block not the Loop, and let I and I execute as one.
